Here at Family Member Animal Hospital, we’re happy to welcome both clients and and their pets with quality veterinary care and top notch services. Since opening the clinic in 1998, Dr. Gunckel has created lasting relationships with cat and dog owners in the Loveland and surrounding areas. We know you take the health of your pets seriously. Dr. Gunckel and the team here are dedicated to the wellbeing of your animal and to providing the care that they deserve for them to live a long and healthy life. Our goal is to keep veterinary care affordable and accessible for our community. We consider our patients as family, and strongly believe in communicating with owners to achieve the best outcome for their animals. Client education is an important aspect of our practice. We hope that you to always feel like you have a say in your pet’s care, from diagnosis to treatment plans.  Dr. Gunckel and her staff are happy to work with owners and pets to provide personalized care that best fits your needs. With our full service veterinary hospital, we can treat a wide variety of conditions with many treatment options.  Ideally, we would love to be able to focus on the prevention of dangerous illnesses, or to slow the progression of diseases wherever possible. To achieve this goal, we offer cat and dog vaccinations that fit your pet’s individual lifestyle. Another important but often overlooked preventative measure is dental care, as there are a number of health concerns that can be caused by poor dental hygiene. For pets that often slip under fences or out front doors, we offer skilled microchipping implantation to help reunite you with a lost loved one. Fleas, ticks and heartworms are especially dangerous for our furry family members, and we offer treatments that will prevent your pet from picking up any of these and bringing them home.  If your pet needs just a little bit of extra care, we also offer dietary counseling to help with weight or allergy issues. Behavioral counseling and dog training classes are especially wonderful for those pets that get easily stressed around other animals or people. If all your pet needs is a good bath and a nail trim, we have options for full grooming services. Family Member Animal Hospital even provides massage therapy to both pets and equines. Dr. Gunckel has many years of surgical experience in spaying and neutering. She has a special interest in surgery and offers years of experience with more intensive surgical procedures. We use our advanced in-house diagnostics, laboratory testing and x-ray capabilities to provide quick and accurate answers to stressful symptoms. Dr. Gunckel is very compassionate when it comes to quality of life assessments. We strive to make the difficult decision and process of euthanasia as least stressful as possible. Dr. Gunckel will even offer in-home euthanasia for existing clients. We know how hard it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet, and we want to make sure you’re able to do this as comfortable as possible.

Our hospital is also environmentally friendly. We are a green clinic, which recycles our plastics, cardboard, and aluminum cans. We encourage our clients to bring in their used pill vials cleaned and unlabeled.

Family Member Animal Hospital is proud to serve both pets and owners in the Loveland, Fort Collins, Drake, Estes Park, Windsor, Johnstown, Berthoud, Longmont and Greeley communities.

Meet Dr. Kay Gunckel

“Dr. Kay”

In 1998, Dr. Gunckel founded her veterinary practice in Loveland, CO to better serve the animal-owning community. She named it Family Member Animal Hospital, and as the name implies, the clinic is dedicated to caring for family members — where pets are family!

She is devoted to providing a friendly, compassionate bedside manner and has a strong relationship with her long term clients and patients. She would love to develop that same relationship with you and your pets. Personal and individualized care makes a world of difference when it comes to the health and happiness of the pets she sees. She is currently focused on helping dogs and cats and specializes in small animal surgery. From routine spay/neuters to more advanced caesarean sections, abdominal surgery, bladder surgery and much more, Dr. Gunckel is able to provide the kind of expertise care that your pet deserves.

Although not her current focus, in the past, equine medicine has been one of her areas of expertise. She’s even won a National Championship with her horse Emma in 2017.

Dr. Gunckel’s two adult children, J.J. and Ashley, along with her numerous amount of animals including her favorite dog named Chester, her favorite prized horse Emma, two new adorable kittens, and many other critters that make up her loving family. She’s about to expand that family again with the arrival of her first grandchild. Dr. Kay also regularly attends her local church. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, camping, showing dogs and is passionate in judging and competing in competitive trail-riding all over the country.
